Chelsea miss out on signing World Cup who has opted to join Monaco instead
Chelsea have missed out on the signing of Russia’s World Cup star Aleksandar Golovin as he has agreed to join former French champions AS Monaco on a five years deal.
The Blues looked to have won the race for his signature after Roman Abramovich convinced the player and CSKA Moscow that moving to London was best for him.
They reportedly beat off competition from Manchester United and Juventus to land the 22 years old. However, Golovin decided to take his time before deciding where to go next, and he ultimately decided against moving to Stamford Bridge.
Monaco who were never close to signing him, just announced that they have completed the signing of the former CSKA Moscow man on a five years deal.
the French club’s president, Vadim Vasilyev told Russian media:
“Monaco and CSKA Moscow today agreed on the transfer of Golovin on a five-year contract.
“Honestly, until the last moment I was not sure that I would be able to co-ordinate this transfer.
“In addition to Chelsea, Golovin also claimed Juventus had interest. However, our main competitor was Chelsea.
“I believe that Monaco offered more favourable conditions for the club and a more understandable project for the player.”
